Philander Smith edges Paul Quinn in overtime, 84–82
DALLAS — Isaiah McCallum scored 19 points and Jordan Hicks added 18, but Paul Quinn came up just short in an 84–82 overtime loss to Philander Smith (Ark.) on Saturday afternoon at the Health & Wellness Center.
The Tigers (6-9, 2-4) erased a 10-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Panthers 42–32 in the second half to force overtime, fueled by improved shooting and strong play from the bench. Paul Quinn shot 55.2% after the break and got 41 points from its reserves, but could not complete the comeback in the extra period.
McCallum was Paul Quinn's most consistent presence, going 7 of 13 from the field and 5 of 7 at the free-throw line while grabbing eight rebounds. Hicks provided a spark off the bench, hitting 5 of 8 shots and 3 of 6 from 3-point range while going a perfect 5 of 5 at the line.
TJ Mitchell played all 40 minutes and finished with 14 points and six assists, while Tayvion Fisher added 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including three 3-pointers. Deon McLaughlin chipped in eight points and three rebounds as the Tigers matched Philander Smith on the boards, 36–36, and in second-chance points, 9–9.
Philander Smith (13-2, 6-0) was led by Raymond Reece, who scored 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Elijah Anderson added 16 points and five assists for the Panthers, who stayed unbeaten in conference play by scoring 10 points in overtime to Paul Quinn's eight.
Turnovers proved costly for the Tigers, who committed 24, leading to 28 points for Philander Smith. Despite outscoring the Panthers in bench points, 41–22, Paul Quinn could not overcome the miscues in a tightly contested conference matchup.
