Tougaloo shoots past Paul Quinn in conference matchup
TOUGALOO, Miss. — Tougaloo College used a blistering shooting performance to pull away from Paul Quinn College, rolling to a 94-58 victory Friday afternoon in HBCUAC men’s basketball action.
Paul Quinn (7-11, 3-6 HBCUAC) was led by Deon McLaughlin, who scored 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting and added four free throws. Mekhi Johnson contributed 11 points and six rebounds, while Isaiah McCallum finished with 10 points for the Tigers.
Paul Quinn struggled from the perimeter and the free-throw line, shooting just 2 of 17 from 3-point range (11.8%) and 10 of 23 at the stripe (43.5%). The Tigers shot 41.1% overall and were outrebounded 44-21.
Tougaloo (13-7, 10-2 HBCUAC) built a 44-27 halftime lead behind an efficient offense and never looked back. Willie Anderson poured in a game-high 27 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Eric Steward Jr. added 23 points, and Demarcus Hollis recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bulldogs shot 58.1% from the field and connected on 7 of 14 from long range. Tougaloo also dished out 22 assists and forced 15 turnovers, turning defensive pressure into consistent scoring opportunities.
Paul Quinn briefly found rhythm early in the second half, but Tougaloo answered with a 50-point second half to put the game out of reach and secure the conference win.
