Mitchell scores 19, Johnson posts double-double as Paul Quinn falls in overtime at Huston-Tillotson
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — TJ Mitchell scored 19 points, and Mekhi Johnson recorded a dominant double-double, but Paul Quinn dropped a hard-fought 95-92 overtime decision to Huston-Tillotson on Saturday afternoon in HBCU Athletic Conference play at Branch Gymnasium.
Paul Quinn (7-16, 3-8 HBCUAC) rallied from a 13-point first-half deficit and forced overtime behind a strong second-half surge, but the Rams capitalized late to secure the conference victory.
Mitchell led the Tigers offensively, shooting 6 of 11 from the field and knocking down three 3-pointers. Johnson controlled the glass with 11 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end, while adding four assists and three blocks in a full 40-minute effort.
Isaiah McCallum contributed 17 points and nine rebounds, and Jordan Hicks added 13 points off the bench. Deon McLaughin provided a key spark with 14 points, converting eight free throws as Paul Quinn consistently attacked the rim.
The Tigers struggled early, shooting just 26.7% in the first half as Huston-Tillotson built a 46-33 halftime advantage behind efficient shooting. Paul Quinn responded with a 47-point second half, shooting 51.9% after the break to erase the deficit and send the game into overtime tied at 80.
Paul Quinn dominated the offensive boards, finishing with 21 offensive rebounds and 19 second-chance points, while also scoring 24 points off turnovers. The Tigers connected on 33 free throws, keeping pressure on the Rams throughout the comeback.
Huston-Tillotson (7-12, 2-9 HBCUAC) was led by Caleb Campbell's 18 points and Blake Fisher's 17 points. Cade Holzman added 15 points and six blocks, while Shannon Robinson recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds to help the Rams withstand Paul Quinn's late push.
The teams traded baskets in overtime before Huston-Tillotson converted key free throws in the closing moments to seal the win.
Paul Quinn will look to build on its second-half momentum as conference play continues down the stretch.
