Paul Quinn Volleyball Earns Road Victory Over Alcorn State
LORMAN, Miss. September 13, 2025 The Paul Quinn College volleyball team picked up its first win of the 2025 season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Alcorn State 3–1 (15–25, 25–21, 25–18, 25–20) at the Davey L. Whitney Health & Physical Education Complex. The victory evens Paul Quinn’s record at 1–1 while Alcorn falls to 0–7.
After a slow start in the opening set, where the Tigers committed nine attack errors and hit -.071, Paul Quinn regrouped with a balanced offense and timely defense to control the final three frames.
Leading the way was outside hitter Carrie Weston, who posted a team-high 13 kills along with two block assists for 14 total points. She was joined by Jayden Jones, who matched Weston's 13 kills on 42 swings to give Paul Quinn a reliable one-two punch at the net.
Setter Spirit Phipps orchestrated the offense with 27 assists while adding seven digs and two block assists. Defensive specialist A'Niyah Harrison anchored the back row with 22 digs and chipped in one service ace. Ashley Sanchez was equally effective defensively, tallying 21 digs while also recording an ace.
At the net, Jakayla Morrow provided a spark with six kills on an efficient .455 hitting percentage and added four blocks (one solo, three assists). Paul Quinn finished with 14 total blocks as a team, a key difference in slowing Alcorn's attack.
For Alcorn State, Jessika Martinez led all players with 16 kills on .344 hitting, while Courtney Carter added 14 kills despite 13 errors. Setter Juliana Henao handed out 27 assists and libero Tomoni Giddings collected 17 digs, but the Braves were undone by inconsistency, committing 29 attack errors and 17 service errors over the match.
Paul Quinn hit its stride offensively after the first set, finishing with hitting percentages of .231, .219, and .216 in the final three frames. The Tigers' defense held Alcorn to just .075 and .095 in the third and fourth sets, sealing the road win.
The Tigers (1–1) will look to build on this momentum as they continue their non-conference slate, while Alcorn (0–7) searches for its first victory of the year.
